Elephant Story

In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University
On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully.
He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant’s foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.
Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.
Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter couldn’t help wondering if this was the same elephant. Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

Probably wasn’t the same elephant

Why Men Shouldn’t Write Advice Columns

Dear Bob:

I hope you can help me here. The other day I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn’t gone more than a few hundred yards down the road when my engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband’s help. When I got home I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was parading in front of the wardrobe mirror dressed in my underwear and high-heel shoes, and he was wearing my make up.

I am 32, my husband is 34 and we have been married for twelve years. When I confronted him, he tried to make out that he had dressed in my lingerie because he couldn’t find his own underwear. But when I asked him about the make up, he broke down and admitted that he’d been wearing my clothes for six months. I told him to stop or I would leave him.

He was let go from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasingly distant. I don’t feel I can get through to him anymore. Can you please help?

Sincerely, Mrs. Sheila Usk

Dear Sheila:

A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the jubilee clips holding the vacuum pipes onto the inlet manifold. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the carburetor float chamber. I hope this helps.

Bob

Moishe Got Tagged

On the very last day that the temporary tag would have expired-Oct 26th-I was able to get a new tag for Moishe.  Ironically, an educator’s tag was more than I could afford on a TA’s salary and so I got the normal plate.

Now he can run free in the wild while we watch his mating habits.

Costume Party

I decided to be a nerd for Halloween. I know, I know, I already am a nerd so it doesn’t count for a costume. Whatever, I went to nerddom and BEYOND.

My ensemble consisted of:

  • my lab goggles from either Oxford or even high school
  • pants from Goodwill
  • my own buttondown shirt and shoes
  • suspenders that Ahsan gave me
  • lots of Nerds candy

The party itself was a lot of fun, but I sense that my nerd costume didn’t really win over the girls as I hoped.

Camp Nowhere vs. Accepted

Pearl, Tara, and I were talking about Camp Nowhere. Now I’m pretty sure that Accepted is like Camp Nowhere but like the “college years.”  They both feature some kids that make up an institution with some sketchy head-of-institution.  Accepted has Jack Black, while Camp Nowhere has Christopher Lloyd.  In Accepted, they created a college where the students learned whatever they wanted.  In Camp Nowhere, they made a camp where the kids improved on whatever they wanted.  It’s irrefutable:  they’re the same move but for different generations.

Looks like I wasn’t the only one who came up with these similarities.

Cats up for Grabs

Laura Lee has some kittens up for adoption.  Anyone interested?  She’s taking them before “euth day” so that they won’t be “euth’ed.”  Therefore, you have some time to decide.

The Ramblings of a Good Saturday Night

So after talking with Shu for a bit, she kind of convinced me to go exercise. Plus, I didn’t feel like going to a concert tonight with some of my friends (when do I ever want to go to a concert??).

However, I left my gym clothes at those same friends’ house. In the end, I decided to take a walk to Taco Bell because it’s I’ve wanted to do since I moved in here.

It took me like 20 minutes to get up there, and I was smiling all the way up there. It’s kind of bittersweet because I wish I had someone to walk with, but no one really wants to walk that far. On the way there a few times I saw some people walking with each other. At Taco Bell I had no idea what to get but it’s all beans and cheese there anyway so it didn’t matter.

On the way back, I saw an accident on North Druid Hills Road, but it was an obvious rear end, so it didn’t matter if I stuck around to testify to the police anyway. I kept walking.

I saw a high school football game going on. Probably my old high school playing. I should have taken a peak, but I kept walking.

My patio was waiting for me, and I sat down for ten minutes and just enjoyed the burritos.

Coolest Receipt Ever

I got a bill to pay some random charge from like 3 months ago to the apartment complex: $6.75.

When I got there, they didn’t have any receipts for me, so I got a photocopy of the money I spent as a receipt. Coolest receipt I’ve ever gotten.

NYC: the rest of my trip

So when I wasn’t watching Revolution, I was spending mornings with the Fam or out with friends.

Each morning I had a delicious bagel… or five.  I got to talk with my aunt and uncle.  Good stuff.

Saturday, I went out to The City and met up with Ateaya and her friend Karina.  Ateaya’s been my friend since Oxford, and she is definitely a city girl at heart.  I found her sitting on the steps of The Met with some city sunglasses with her city clothes.

We walked around for a few minutes and met up with Karina who is pretty awesome.  It’s some kind of indescribable thing… like how the dialog made Clerks and Knocked Up really good.  Her dialog is good.  Plus, it’s fun teasing her.  For instance, telling her that she knows NYC inside and out because she has lived there all her life somehow turned into a sore spot for her.  Hilarious.

We all walked around for random food while Ateaya celebrated Ramadon.  We’re such great friends.  Then, we finally went to The Met.  Cool stuff.  Then I finally got to see Revolution.

[you can read the Revolution post if you want]

After the show, Mike came out for a bit and talked with us.  He looked sore!  I had no idea that it was really that much work dancing up there on the stage.  He gave me a few posters, and I bought a few tshirts for the family.

We left for dinner, and on the way, I saw about a minute’s worth of Jill.  She works at a really famous restaurant and is therefore busy, but it was good to see her.  Then, we all went out to a restaurant that the whole family enjoys.   Saturday was definitely a really good day.

On Sunday, I rested and chillaxed with Maryanne.  She lived up to her promise of the long awaited 404 image. I am really proud of it and proud of Maryanne’s photoshop skills.  My cousin Amy called me a dork for getting the picture taken, but hey, that’s the kind of dorky fun that this dork likes to have.

Sooo… those are all the random snippets about my trip that I’m thinking about right now.  Any other comments on the trip are appreciated.

Visit to New York: Revolution

I went to New York City this weekend, primarily to see my cousin Mike’s show, Revolution.   Admittedly, it is not a show that I would normally watch because it is a mixture of Irish tap dance and Rock and Roll.  Dancing?  Concert?  Not my style.  However, it’s my cousin who choreographed, directed, wrote, and starred in it.  Of course I went to see it!

And when I got there, I was thoroughly impressed.  The live band kicked ass, the dancing was actually kind of cool, and of course Mike did really really well.   My favorite part: he danced and played the guitar at the same time.  The New York Times didn’t think that he was actually playing when they reviewed him and so the band’s guitarist was crossing his arms during this scene.  Hilarious.

The other reviews though, were awesome. Everyone had something good to say, and the Joyce Theater, where it was held at, was packed every night.  Mike says he might go to Las Vegas next.  I might try to follow the tour.
