What’s new is Fixed

What’s new is fixed–yay!  Now you can see what’s going on with lskatzdotcom directly from the front page.

While I’m on the topic of saying what is new with lskatzdotcom, I’ll go ahead and say that my online albums have been moved over to flickr.  Not that there’s any new pictures really… or is there?  I think I have an album from a few weeks ago that I’ll upload when I feel like it.

What was I thinking…?

Last night around 6pm I volunteered to teach lecture for introduction to biology.  The topic: mitosis and meiosis.  Why is that topic so difficult to teach?

Fortunately I think I did as well as I could, and the students aren’t complaining about me as far as I know.  Surprisingly there were tons of questions, which were answered well.  The Boss gave me brownie points too.  I eat brownie points for lunch yummmmm

Yeah… I’m such a mature teacher…

Finally Moved In

I am missing some major things like a tv, a coffee table, and a dinner table, but last night the dresser was finished.  After my mezuzah was put up, it signified that the apartment was mine.

me: Almost done nailing in the mezuzah.
Jeff: The nails are crooked!  How can it possibly be removed?
me: That’s a job for Hamas
Uncontrollable laughter from Jeff

That’s right, Hamas.  Come and try it, but your hand might start burning as soon as you come in contact with the mezuzah.

Bicycle Bob

I have wondered about this guy who I came to know as Bicycle Bob. He is an Atlanta celebrity who stands on a major street corner all the time with a big buldge in his tight pants. Most think he is a male prostitute, but it was all rumor.

Check out the documentary below

Human Tetris

I would totally watch this gameshow if it aired in the US. Even if it were still in Japanese.

Things Might Be Looking Up

  • My advisor and collaborators are talking about publishing in Science, which is a top-notch magazine. Not only do first-year PhD students not usually publish, but it is also majorly difficult to get in a good magazine like that one. I feel like they’re getting my hopes up with this kind of talk, but I’m starting to succumb to it.
I told my professor that I wanted to try another topic besides gene networks, but if it becomes such a great topic, maybe I should reconsider it. I could do my thesis on it when I finally choose one.
  • I took a look at my apartment finally, and I love it!
    • The bedroom is big, with a big adjoining bathroom and walk-in closet.
    • The den is a nice size. ’nuff said.
    • The kitchen has everything except a microwave and a pantry… but it doesn’t matter because I have a microwave. Also, because it is a single, I have all the room in the kitchen to myself. I won’t run out of room for food.
    • The patio is a nice size and overlooks the walkway to the garden. A tree overlooks the patio. Es hermoso.
    • Did I mention that it is a single?
    • It’s 10 minutes from school and a one minute walk to either James’ or Lizzie & Eric’s place.

Things have been a little rough lately, but life as a whole might be looking up.

Publication

I’m finally going to be published.  I’ve been in two wet labs and three bioinformatics labs, and it’s finally happening… oh god I hope I didn’t just jinx it by saying that.

The paper is a rough draft and is written by my advisor, but after I finish reading it a second time through, I might have a couple of things to add.  However, it is well-written and explanatory.  There might not be much more to say.

I just searched NCBI for my name and found my name-twin at Yale, Lee Katz. Apparently he has five publications.  How can I distinguish myself?  I suppose I’ll have to author my papers as Lee S. Katz (My name-twin is Lee D. Katz).

I am Feeling Secure

I rode the trolly and walked the rest of the way to Publix today to get – among other things – some sunglasses.  After picking out the cool-looking ones, I made my way to the register and checked out.  In the middle of the transaction, it rang up as “FG LADIES SUNGLASSES.”

I totally wore them for the rest of the afternoon while I was outside.  And they looked manly.  Booyah.

P.S. Ask me to show off my sunglasses to you.

Anonymous Site Surfing

It seems that a lot of people are asking around for how to surf the web anonymously. I’d go with http://www.hidemyass.com
because it seems faster. The reason someone would want something like this is if their ISP were watching what sites they were visiting. Also, it is a good workaround if your ISP is blocking certain sites.

Lab

I am teaching a really fun lab this week, but I am not inclined to talk too much about it online.  All I can say is that if you want to see a really fun biology lab (and you can totally participate if you want!), meet me at the CE field around 3:30 on Tuesday or Thursday.  It’ll last about an hour outside I think.

S.E.C.

I am in a higher class than I thought.  Scored a 60% even with my low income and low wealth.   Thus, I am awesome because of bioinformatics.
